The missing reference

What would an interstellar object teach us if we could examine it closely enough?

No mission has reached any of the three.

Its structure. Its chemistry. Its behavior. The traces it leaves.

What would we learn to recognize?

The record

Before the three, there were plates.

Sky surveys, observatory logs and archive plates hold 140 years of observations that were made for other reasons. A few of them recorded something once, and never again.

Six points from the record · three open here

  1. 1883

A Mexican astronomer recorded 447 objects crossing the Sun over two days.

  2. 1950-04-12

Nine star-like points appeared on one Palomar plate. Thirty minutes earlier, they were not there.

  3. 1952-07-19

Three bright points vanished within fifty minutes. Seventy-one years later, a 10.4-meter telescope found nothing at their positions.

  4. 1957

POSS-I closed in April. Sputnik launched in October. The observing channel changed.

  5. 2017

The first confirmed interstellar visitor accelerated away from the Sun without the visible gas or dust normally used to explain such motion.

  6. 2026

Transient detections on old plates became steadily rarer as geomagnetic storms strengthened, then returned when the storms passed.

Pattern

NO SINGLE OBSERVATION ANSWERS THE QUESTION.

Some predate satellites. Some behave like reflected light. Some point toward the altitude where our satellites now orbit. Some change with the space weather there. Some appear once and are never recovered.

What if they are not separate?

What if we have been looking at the evidence without knowing what it was evidence of?

If a surveillance system changed with our ability to observe it, would we ever see the system, or only a sequence of unrelated anomalies?
